By now everyone is hopefully winding down from a stomach full of delicious turkey. I know I am! The tradition of Thanksgiving is one that is cherished by many. It is the one day a year that I stop giving out Internet Marketing tips and smell the roses, giving thanks to my friends, family, and all the good fortunes that I’m so thankful to have in my life. Judging by the text messages and Facebook messages I received on Thanksgiving from friends, I am not alone.
I am unaware if you have ever tried to cook a Turkey, but it isn’t as easy as it seems. I originally thought it was extremely simple. I would just “set it and forget it” and make the best turkey ever served on a table for Thanksgiving! Well, I was wrong. Trust me; it was drier than an empty glass in the desert. Next time around I’m going to do things a little different. More vegetables, more spices, and more importantly, a recipe!
Being I’m a digitally focused individual and a newly enthusiastic iPhone 5 user, I’m going to leverage the plethora of iPhone apps that exist for recipes. These cooking apps provide gems of cooking information and tips to help even the top tested chef. Below I have listed 5 iphone 5 apps for recipes and cooking:
Epicurious
This iPhone cooking app seems to be at the EPIcenter of all cooking apps. It is created, owned, and operated by the heavy hitting Conde Nast. There are over 25,000 recipes to work with and you are given more options than realistically needed. As soon as you open the app you can search for food or drink recipes by keyword, browse for most popular recipes, create a shopping list, save your favorite recipes as your own cookbook, and a few other useful recipe focused features. I highly recommend this app for the more technical savvy individual as the number of options may make your head explode like an unpunctured baked potato on Thanksgiving.

All Recipes Dinner Spinner
This is my absolute favorite cooking app for the iPhone. I actually used this app back in 2009 when I was in college just getting my feet wet in the kitchen. I found it very fun and inspirational as it differs in that it creates a meal out of ingredients you wish to incorporate. So you pick your foundation, such as chicken, and then go from there. You can literally just give your phone a shake and viola! You have a new recipe to work with. Check this app out if you are looking for a more creative way to spice up your cooking!

Jamie’s Recipes
Thanks to Jamie O we are graced with another cooking and recipe app for the iPhone. This app provides you with a lovely video introduction from Jamie, a pack of free dishes with step-by-step instructions to hold your hand along the way, and more importantly, tutorial videos for proper use of kitchen utensils. There is the option to purchase premium packs you can purchase if you are inclined. After all it is a business. I personally have never used this app before, but based on my research and the rave reviews, it appears to be worth a stab.

iFood Assistant
This recipe and cooking iPhone app comes to us from another juggernaut, KRAFT. The application is very user friendly and allows you to begin by choosing the type of meal you are looking to tackle. You can choose from snack, breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc. and then go from there. You also have the ability to browse various recipes, watch cooking videos (over 40), and organize your personal recipes. Based on reviews, they do a terrible job with product placements. But like I previously stated, even recipe iPhone apps are a business.

How to Cook Everything
A special shout out is in order for good ole’ Cullinate, Inc. for this recipe specific iPhone app. The title is a bit deceiving because it doesn’t really teach you how to cook everything. In order to access this wisdom, you need to purchase Mark Bittman’s bestselling cookbook with the same name. However, in this trusty little application you with 100+ recipes and variations, search capabilities, timers, shopping lists, a friend feed integrated into Facebook/Twitter, and more. Based on reviews it is worth checking out.

We really are blessed to live in the digital age that we do. I mean imagine a 100 years ago, the only recipes you had access to were those of your family. That is where it all stemmed from and without great, great, great…grandmom experimenting in the kitchen, none of these iPhone apps would exist.
As stated above, I will be using these and other apps next year come turkey time. I’m vowing to make the best turkey ever eaten on a Thanksgiving day.
